Viva Tonal on Craigslist

Post by estott »

This beauty is near me, but I have no room at all. Viva Tonal machines might not be as good as Orthophonics, but this cabinet is striking.

I sent the seller an email (like I have room, but...) and haven't heard a word back...

Sean, not having room is one of the most lame excuses. Go for it!

I know, I know...and I will if I hear back!

My living and dining rooms look like phonograph salvage yards though, even to the point where even I am getting tired of looking at the chaos!

I did...I might just have to share a photo of my madness, even though I'm embarassed by it...

Anyway, I just got off the phone with the seller and I'm going to look at the machine this afternoon with cash, just in case... 8-)

This should be a nice project. As noted in some posts made on (now defunct, unfortunately,) phono-forums, the horn may need some careful attention--repaired seams, caulking, etc.--to return it to its full performance. Also, in addition to overhauling the sound box with fresh, compliant gaskets, the back flange gasket will probably have to be replaced. (I think there was a post about this on this board.)

Once restored, though, the results should be well worth it. This model was designed to compete with similarly priced mid-sized Orthophonic Victrolas, such as the 4-4 and 4-40, which as most of us know, are hardly anemic when it comes to sound quality.

I'm looking forward to it. I've basically told the seller I'll take it as long as it's in nice condition, which he said it is.

I've never had a VT machine, but I have rebuilt a few soundboxes for them. I've only ever heard one of the smaller models play and I was rather impressed.

If all goes well, I should be back with it about five hours from now. I may have to suspend it from the dining room ceiling so I can get from the dining room into my kitchen, but I'll worry about that later...heh, heh...

I hope the painted grille is intact- looks as if it's one of the best features:
