how is the keyhole escutcheon plate for the Edison C-19 att.

Post by A Ford 1 »

Hi All,
I just purchased yesterday an Edison C-19 Diamond Disc machine at a local Baltimore auction. It has its original grill cloth and is in very nice condition compared to the rough one I have owned for some 45 or more years but it is missing the keyhole escutcheon plate. I purchased a replacement plate yesterday, since the machine I have owned is also missing same, but I do not know if it should be held in place by brads or screws.

Would one of the DD people out there please tell me what I should use to attach the escutcheon with. I would certainly like to hear from any one that is willing to part with original brads or screws.

It has a nickel plated reproducer which I will probably sell as I own a fine gun metal one that originally would have been its standard equipment. Unfortunately, it smells of mold in the record storage area. I hope that baking soda will help with the odor. The serial number is higher than 173825 of the one I have owned and if I recall it is 173899. I think it was made about 1926 or 27 and will likely be delivered later this week.

I thank any and all people ahead of time for their kind reply,
Allen

This one I just dragged home has that oxidized nickel finish or whatever they called it as well. It's serial number 176501 and they bought it new on August 23rd I think it was, in 1924. This date on the cabinet sticker is a new one on me and I've not seen that before on a diamond disk machine. Maybe that's something the dealer did when they got new inventory or something. But the keyhole escutcheon on mine has those tiny screws like the earlier C-19's used, they are just darkened is all. This one is a nice machine and the motor sure runs quietly. Baking soda should take care of that musty smell, it just takes awhile.

I think it's far more likely that the stamped date was done at the cabinet factory (in this case, a factory owned by Edison in New London, Wisconsin). These stamped dates have been seen before and shown on this forum. Fran will be able to shed more light on this... :)

George is correct. While conducting my ongoing survey of various "Factory No." stickers found on DD machines, I was informed of a few that had dates stamped onto them. In fact, my A 100 has one such sticker. Given that several different models, from several different manufacturing facilities exhibit these stickers, I'm convinced that it was applied at the manufacturer's facilities, and I think the stamped dates likely signified the cabinet's completion or final inspection date. By examining the collected data, you'll note that there are even two entries from machines in the UK.

Here is a link to the most recent result of my survey: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 10#p172410.

Allan, the fasteners were very small wood screws. I'd send you two of them, except for the fact that I sent the only spare pair I had to another member in need over a year ago. Hopefully another member here can help you out.

Best of luck,
Fran

Hi all,
I thank all of your for your valuable input.
I am sorry to say that this dimwit has the old C-19 in a dimly lighted area and did not notice that it has its keyhole escutcheon in place secured by the two original screws. I am not so sure my head is properly screwed on or I would have looked with a flashlight the first time. actually the old one is so black it looked like the wood around it. The keyhole escutcheon I bought arrived yesterday and is rectangular and I do not believe it is really for a C-19.
The newly purchased C-19 should arrive Friday and I will remove the ID plate to better read the serial number and report the other needed information for Francis' C-19 list.
My old C-19 horn as I recall has Japaning or gunmetal (what ever you wish to call it) finish so I assume the C-19 should be equipped with that type of reproducer. When the newly purchased C-19 arrives I will inspect its horn finish. I have the Nickel reproducer in my hand, I removed it for safe keeping, it is the the new standard or Edisonic type serial number A 250224 NS it may be the original one but I think it is a later replacement.
Among the other items I purchased are two Victor Orthophonic white metal reproducers, a Nickel Claravox with a copper pipe adapter to fit the Victor Orthophonic tone arm, a gold finish Vicsonia, and a gold finish Cheney PId.FEB-8-16.
I also own a nickel Vicsonia that I purchased about a year ago to play DD through a victor Orthophonic horn.
The Claravox reproducers diaphragm is more like an Edison diaphragm and I can hardly wait to compare the sound from the two different reproducers.
Ah! the strange things that motivate me to spend money! next I will have to have a device shaped like an L the top to go in an Orthophonic reproducer with a diamond stylus mounted on the right end of the horizontal of the L. This would simulate the way the electrical Edison pickup worked.
By the by, for those thinking one must have the reproducer powered through its travel, just stop an think the late electric Edison phonographs tone arm was powered by the record, so in the end even Edison did not power the tone arm.
Well I must sign off as dinner is on its way.
I thank every one helping me and the other people that are in a learning process,
Allen
