Large Record/cylinder, phono, etc auction Nazareth PA Jun 3

Post by Brad »

Saw this this morning on the local news.

http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/aucti ... id=2861129

There are so many lots of cylinders and records I can imagine most will go cheap.

I can't make it, but if anyone attends, please post a report.
Why do we need signatures when we are on a first avatar basis?

looks like some fairly common machines, but mostly records, a ton of them, cylinders and discs, though broken up into lots of 20 to 30... that auction could take forever.

Had a fun day at the Auction in Nazareth Pa today. Rain ended and the sun came out by the start of the auction. There were over 80 lots each consisting of 15 to 20 cylinders. Also about 150 lots of records. Started at 10am and was over by 12:30pm. Filled up the SUV.

There were about two of the two minute cylinders without mold, otherwise fun auction with about 15 attendees.

I guess I'm glad I didn't make the trip, besides I just came home with a collection with thousands of records.

What did the lots average in price?

The two min cylinders went anywhere from $5 a lot to $35 a lot. The four min cylinders went anywhere from $15 to $45 a lot. I won seven lots (140) of the two min cylinders $5 to $7 a lot. I bought them just for the boxes. I only found two good cylinders not covered in mold, the rest are trash. I also won a bunch of the four min cylinders. About 75% of those were very good with some quality ones mixed in.

Most of the two minute cylinders sold to bidders on AuctionZip. There were no pictures of the cylinders just of the boxes. I think these bidders are going to be upset when they see what they paid for plus shipping.

What about the 78s? I was more curious about those since they seemed to be above average items that had been "hand picked" for a collection over a long period of time. Not that I needed any more of anything, but those were why I was interested!

I'm glad I didn't go as well, but, like Sean, thought the 78s looked rather choice.

Best,

I ended up with 27 lots of the 78 records, including most of the Blue and Purple Victor labels. Surprisingly there was little interest in most of the 78s and probably half of the lots went initially unsold. After the main auction the auctioneers were attempting to sell all of the unsold lots as a group. I don't know if they were successful.
