FOR SALE: Columbia Elite Table Model Grafonola - $750

Post by Gatyam »

For sale is a nice, original example of a Columbia Elite Grafonola which, according to Baumbach's book on Columbia disc phonographs, was Columbia's first table model concealed horn Grafonola. To quote: "The Elite with rounded corners was introduced in November of 1909. The mahogany cabinet had a hinged "modulator panel" in front of the horn which allowed flexibility in controlling volume. Small elliptical holes could be uncovered or the entire panel could be opened to modulate the sound. The machine featured a 12" turntable and four spring motor."

The cabinet measures 14 ½" tall, 21" wide, and 21" deep. It is in nice, original condition, with a few light scratches on the top of the lid. The motor, which is a bit on the noisy side, runs well. The 12" turntable trim ring, which is often missing from the Columbia machines that came equipped with them, is present and in good condition. The only apology for this machine is that it's missing the little wood knob that would be used to pull the front door open.

The machine is available for pickup in the western suburbs of Chicago, or I can deliver it to Union...$750 cash, firm.

Thanks for turning your head (or screen) sideways to look, and kindly email or pm me with interest.

I have this same machine. It is a very heavy monster. I'm not sure which came out first, the VV XII, or the Elite. Both machines had a small horn. On my Elite, it had a long curly horn, and the machine is quite loud and clear. To oil it, you had to tilt it backwards and have access through the trap door on the bottom. Properly lubricated, the motor is very quiet. These are unusual and scarce machines.
