Yea, that's a pity. I saw a Diamond Disc phonograph with the middle cut you to make a desk too. A true phono-holic would buy that and restore it! Who has it in them to do it? :D

Or if one didn't have the capabilities to restore it, they could at least 'honor' it by using it as a stand for their Victor V or something...

That is a VERY odd piece. Someone went to the considerable trouble to shorten the side doors and to make a drawer out of the top center, but they left the crank escutcheon.

As awful as it is, I have to admit, somebody clever went to a lot of bother. Why not just buy a small desk rather than do this?
