This is a Silvertone Deluxe. Looks like it's in some kind of leather. This type of Deluxe is uncommon, and they are often is bad shape. Nice machine, but for the wrong price.

Now that's a break! It was $400 when I first posted on this topic. Definitely worth the purchase now. I'm not in the market for such a machine, but if anyone else is, this is the time to get it.

Maybe I am missing something here. Why is $200.00 a good price for that machine? Are they really that rare? How do they compare to the Victrola Orthophonic, Columbia Vivetonal, and late Brunswick(I can't think of the name)portables?

I'm with you Harvey, while I've owned other Silvertones that were nice enough, they didn't hold a candle to something like a 2-55, 2-65, Brunswick Panatrope portable or my favorite, the HMV 102, but maybe I'm missing something too!

I had one- they are well constructed and very attractive and can sound decent, but just that - decent. Definitely several cuts above a Birch or a Phonola, or a Pal, but not enough to go with that price.

I have to agree that $200 is steep, considering the tear in the fabric on the lid.

When restored, these pump out a loud, clear tone, but they are somewhat lacking in the mid-range provide almost no hint of bass--this in spite of the rather long tone chamber which snakes around the motor. I think if the horn's mouth had been positioned at the back of the cabinet, reflecting off the lid--as was the case with all of the high quality portables--the sound quality would have been greatly improved.

I've seen some Silvertones with that configuration- a large nickle plate grille behind the turntable. VERY loud, but not much bass
