Edison Amberola 1A in Dover NH

Post by rgordon939 »

Did anyone on the forum win the Amberola 1A at the Devin Moisan Auction in Dover, NH last night? It sold for $2300 plus an 18% premium. It also included about 100 cylinders. I dropped out at $2200.

Not me, sadly, but primarily because I didn't know about. If I had, I would have been very, very tempted...

What reproducer did it come with? M or L?

It was an L. If it was an M I wouldn't have turned down the $2400 bid when she asked me. Plus I really didn't want to drive to New Hampshire a 5 hour trip each way.

I wonder what cylinders came with it. If there were a lot of Concert, Royal Purple, Grand Opera, and 5500 and higher blue Amberols, that would make this machine a bargain. But I'm dreaming.

I was at the auction and I believe I was the under bidder at $2200 which I felt was top dollar for a machine in the condition it was in. It sold for 2300 plus the penalty. All four drawers where cut down about one eighth of an inch. This is clearly advisable in the photo of the drawers open. The finish on the outside of the cabinet was totally shot with a nice big water stain on the lid. The mechanism was in good shape with just a few rust spots and it was sporting a model L reproducer. There was nothing in records to get excited about.

I was at the auction! I agree it was top dollar for the condition. I didn't even get in a bid. There were no records of interest to me but there were 6 or 8 operatic 28000 series Blue Amberols

I was the buyer on this one. I did preview the auction, but could not stay for the auction due to another commitment, so had a friend buy it for me. Thirty years ago I refinished an A250 Diamond Disc and always thought it would be nice to have an Amberola 1 to go with it. Never had a chance to purchase one locally before so I went for it. It does need some work, but overall I think it should be a solid start for a restoration. Thanks

Congratulations on a nice buy especially with all the cylinders that were in it. I hesitated on $2400 but said no. Can you post some pictures of it before and after you clean it up. Thanks
