I was going to try to pick that Pathé up on my way back to Indiana from Alabama in a few days but now the cat's out of the bag. I emailed the seller about it several days ago when I first saw it. Dang!

Perhaps a thread discussing whether people appreciate such general craiglist or ebay alerts would be in order.
I'm sure we've either benefitted or been burned by parties who post the alerts with no personal interest in an item.

I did start a thread on that very issue called "to post or not to post"... it may have been on the proboards forum though. If I recall, the general concensus was that posting craigslist alerts was not in bad taste or detrimental.

The machines I do post from craigslist are mostly to spur conversation on the machines themselves... if they are strange, unique, not often seen, etc. ...or if it's a crazy good deal.

On the other end of what you've said... I was able to jump on an ad or two in the past because someone had posted it.

I don't think an open discussion on an open forum in a free market is hurting anything. You've got to be in it to win it, as they say.

I do agree with your point when it comes to eBay. I will not post an interesting item for discussion until bidding has ended.

Hm, what's the difference between an ebay listing and a CL post? There isn't any, really. At least an ebay listing has a time limit. A CL post goes for a month. Ebay listings allow bidders to set their own price one way or another, win or lose. CL has usually fixed prices. There are obviously pros and cons to these "posts".

I have mixed feelings about these postings, personally. Recently a machine local to me was posted and I lost it because of it. Another was posted locally as well I ended up getting, however, I had known about it just before it wound up here. I was extrememly pissed off the listing was posted here, honestly, because I was nearly certain I wouldn't get it.

Well, the difference between craigslist and eBay is that once a craigslist item is sold, the ad is gone... and therefore the machine can not be discussed.

Again, my intention here is mostly to spur discussion on strange and interesting machines.

...but i'll stop since it seems i'm offending people when an ad comes from their local region.

jesus, dean. don't stop posting what you want to post. you can never make everyone happy, and frankly, I really enjoy the conversations that flow from those postings, given the variety of machines that they expose us to (a variety we would never otherwise get from, say, the featured phonographs alone)...

with all due respect, I can appreciate frustration in a person's missing out on a machine that was found on craigslist or ebay, but seriously, if you miss out on a machine because someone else got there first... well, that just happens, and in all sorts of contexts, the frustration will still be there whether or not the offering was well publicized or not... something will be blamed. again, personally, I like dean's postings of these listings here... I don't think I've ever acted on one to try to make a buy, but I've certainly liked seeing the variety of phonographs that are floating around, as well as the discussions of many that followed. I mean, isn't that why this forum is here in the first place? and don't get me wrong, I've missed out on a few things before and gotten miffed in some cases... but it's bound to happen, and I've certainly found at least as many machines, if not more, than I've lost. besides, seriously, how many phonographs does a person really need (and I can anticipate the jokes... but really)? and really, in the vast vast majority of cases, I've found that if you miss one, another at some point is sure to follow.

Just for the record, I'm not angry about the Pathé being posted, just disappointed. I'm a big boy and can deal with it. I believe in freedom of the press and freedom of speech and understand that the internet has created a Brave New World. Besides, I've posted a few CL alerts myself! I'm conflicted on the issue, but will have to vote on the side of free speech since that is one of the principles our country was founded upon.

Thanks Brian. That's pretty much how I've felt... and the understanding I thought everyone had when it came to these posts.

I mean right now on the "top page" of posts...

- Another off-brand "orthophonic"?
- Is This A Special Finish?
- Early RCA home recorder - cheap
- VV XVI in NJ, needs some work but at $350 !
- Gothic on eBay

All of these threads involve active craigslist or ebay listings. A lot of these threads have spurred on good conversation. Again, in my mind... that is the point.

If you miss out on a sale from these discussions, I know from experience that is frustrating.

So, I personally will not stop my craigslist searching for my own reference... but still, I don't want to cause any animosity so I most likely will not be posting as much.
