Slightly OT Merry Xmas From Pruhonice - "Silent Night" on DD

Post by Valecnik »

Merry Christmas!

Sorry about the clanking and hissing in part of the background but Christmas Eve cooking needed to go on. Here the traditional dinner for Christmas Eve is Fish (breaded carp) and potato salad among other things.

Hi Bruce the video was just great. Those kid's are sure getting big. You should of had the wife in there. That is a nice looking machine. Did they put that song on a cyclinder? Hope santa was good to you. Merry Christmas.

Very cool Bruce. Thanks for the video, and you got the kids to behave thru the entire song... a true Christmas miracle.

Yes, it did. BA 1606. I added it to the xmas song list in the music section last week, but here it is again. Being a direct recording rather than a DD dub, the sound quility of the cylinder is really quite good.

I want to thank you on the information on the cylinder number BA 1606 (Silent Night). I have a ton of cylinders so some where in a cabinet or box I may have it.

Bruce, I'm kind of surprised that nobody has commented on the lyrics of this version of "Silent Night". None of the three verses heard here are the ones that are most familiar to most Americans. The verses heard in the DD are the same as those on the BA #1606. I have the original record slip for BA 1606 and can confirm that I have never seen these lyrics until I got this copy of 1606. Apparently another set of lyrics has become popular since these records were made. Wonder which lyrics are closest to the original German lyrics?

Greg,

You are right. They start out different right after the first couple words of the first verse. I have no idea at what point the lyrics we are now familiar with became more popular. As to which is closest to the German version, I'd guess the current version closer to the German, based on my very basic understanding of German language. It would also be interesting to compare to the Czech version. This song has lyrics in many languages I guess.

Btw, there is a three languange version sometimes heard here sung by a childrens choir, 1st verse Czech, second German, third English and 4th Czech that's very nice.

It would be great if you could post a good picture of your record slip so I could clearly understand the older English version and do a little comparison.

Attached is a scan of the record slip for BA #1606 which has the lyrics heard on both the DD and the BA. Note that the English lyrics are attributed to "anonymous". So evidently there have been more translations done over the years.

Thank you Greg, I've printed your record slip, even though it's for the cylinder, and put it with my diamond disc for reference. I\ll dig more into the lyrics when I have time unless someone else is able to do it first

Cheers,
Bruce
