Thank you for posting this John. It looks quite interesting and I have the piece on hold and am heading up there right now to see and hopefully buy it. I'll report back on what it is and the condition. Couldn't tell exactly from speaking to the seller. Gotta run...

Hi John:
My guess would be a (very expensive) antique music box & stand. Should be interesting to see what it actually is/was.

Re: Someone in the Bay area grab whatever this is!
I'm sorry to keep you waiting- the mystery cabinet is in my kitchen as I type this. It turned out to be a small disc music box on the top under the cover with 8 extra discs so I grabbed it as fast as I could. What a beauty and unique item at a great price. No, that wasn't it. Let's see... It has an Amberola 30 machine under that lid. NO, not so fortunate to even have that. Can anyone tell me what is might have been made for originally or an approximate date?
The finish on the cabinet is pretty good but I will go over it with "Mar-a-Way" Instant Restorer, a concoction that has worked well on my 20s radios. There are numerous small scratches and a few dented places. I'm not sure what I will end up doing with the cabinet. There is so little room in my house and I want to leave at least a little space for a new Victrola or other phono when I find what appeals to me.
This cabinet sure looks like it could be a phonograph or a record cabinet made to match a phono but no such luck. Still, I'm pretty pleased with it.

Enough of the kidding around. I drove up to Petaluma as fast as I could since the cabinet had a nice look in the photos. As soon as I opened the lower door I did not think it was a record cabinet nor did the cabinet seem to have anything to do with phonographs. An antiques dealer where I stopped afterwards to look around thought it might be a nightstand. Who knows? I think it's pretty so I bought it. Made of what looks like mahogany and with the old, narrow type of dovetailing on the two drawers. The "phonograph" cover on top does not open to reveal that music box I had hoped for. I don't normally watch Craigslist so want to thank you again John for pointing this cabinet out.

Hi Steve:
The craigslist photo had me totally fooled. I was convinced that this must have been a high end music box on a stand.
But, it looks like you got a very nice Victorian(?) linen or blanket chest/cabinet.
Shows there still are some bargains in the Bay area. Congratulations!

I believe this may be what is called a commode -- holds the thundermug, a pitcher and bowl, and assorted bath linens for clean up, and sets in the bedroom. Nice looking at any rate!
