Brand new here. Amos and Andy Question

Post by lemke »

Hi, I am new here, but have been into Edison cylinders for about 15 years. I have two Gems, and one "school" phonograph. Anyway, a while back I was interested in trying my hand at recording onto a blank brown wax cylinder. I bought 5 blanks from a guy on ebay, but they all were recorded on, and I would hate to destroy some vintage recording, however low quality it may be. Well, one of the recordings is pretty good sound quality and it seems to be an old Amos and Andy radio show. Is this a rare find? I plan to buy some blanks from the company in England for my experiments. I also plan make copies of cylinders using the original to make a mold and reproduce them in hard plastic - but making sure they are marked "copy".

Anyway, I look forward to browsing the forums here.

The artist made phonograph records before their radio fame and after I believe. It may be you have a cylinder of an early skit they made for records.

That's an interesting find to come across on supposed blanks. Does it sound like it might have been recorded directly off the radio? Because a homemade recording of an Amos and Andy episode, as opposed to something that Gosden and Correll recorded specifically for the home market, might be quite important. There are a lot of missing Amos and Andy shows, particularly from the 20s. If it sounds like it's recorded off the radio, even if it's only a couple of minutes long, you might want to contact some old time radio show enthusiasts to find out where its place is in the larger scheme of things. You might try the http://zootradio.com/ forums for help.
