Edison Military Band "Chicken Chowder"

Post by OrthoSean »

Just transferred from my 2 minute cylinder using the ACT reproducer and a tiny bit of noise reduction.

Enjoy!

Wheeeeeee! I don't know why this " tickles" me as much as it does but I think it's a hoot!.
It was issued in the October 1906 list . I quote from the Edison Phonograph Monthly.
" Chicken Chowder" by Edison Military Band is a characteristic march selection by Irene M Giblin, in which the crowing of roosters and cackling of hens are mingled with music otherwise suggested by its title. Will be popular with all seeking odd effects in Records.

Good thing Ms Giblin's name didn't end in " et" ;)

Sean, this is cool! I can almost envision the hens and roosters dancing and cackling into the recording horn. These are not your everyday chickens.... these are ragtime chickens.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this one Sean. One of the first 2M cylinders I ever got was this one, and for a long time it was my only ribless wax cylinder. I absolutely loved it, but about 10 years ago I managed to break it. I was quite upset about it too
I never thought I'd hear it again until Kyle posted a youtube video of it on Columbia disc, but I still longed to hear the Edison Military Band recording....and here it is.
Still a great version and still one of my favorites!
You've done a wonderful job on the transfer. It sounds fantastic.
Thanks again for sharing it with us all.

Thought I'd give you some information on the composer---Irene Giblin was a pianist/music demonstrator at a St. Louis, Mo. Department Store, [Stix, Baer & Fuller] known also as the "Grand-Leader". She wrote several great rags, but Chicken Chowder was the best known. The Ossman-Dudley Trio also recorded it on Edison and Columbia. :geek:

Bruce,

The ACT reproducer is a Stanton 500 cartridge mounted in an Edison top housing type of fitting in brass with two outputs (left and right, but it is set up for vertical play already) that you can plug into a pre-amp / amp / computer for doing electric transfers using your Edison machine as the player. They're cool, not sure if anyone is still making them though....I've had mine for about 10 years now.
