FOR SALE/TRADE 2-65 with Wyatt Markus OSB, $150

Post by VanEpsFan1914 »

As the title says I am selling my Victrola 2-65 Portable, built shortly after the 1929 takeover. Based on the low serial number of 009472, I think it is a 1930 model.

The reproducer sounds absolutely divine--it is a rebuild by Wyatt Markus incorporating a re-shaping of the original diaphragm, and replacement of the rusty old ball bearings and dried gaskets.

I bought it as a basket case & enjoyed it after I replaced the mainspring. I tried restoring it recently & am not good at leatherette portables, especially not a padded one.

Here's what's new:

1. The reproducer is incredible.
2. New leatherette needs just a bit of dressing up to perfect.
3. New motorboard made from MDF & sprayed to a matching color, looks original.
4. New platter "felt" actually the proper color of velvet but who's askin?
5. NOS feet, dating from the 1920s.
6. All gold plated hardware being corroded, I polished to brass & redid all in Nikolas Instrument Lacquer.
7. NEW mainspring from Musical Americana, and I rigged it so the mainspring barrel is held on by bolts.
8. The phonograph runs & sounds like a huge 1940s console radio.

The bad:

Corners aren't perfect
No carry handle
Auto brake sucks!
I don't like my own workmanship
I don't like Victor's workmanship when they built this thing.

It's too late to snap pictures. If you have a small phono to trade, a portable of some off-brand that's not too chewed up, let me know...All I ask is that whoever buys it restores it.

Of course, PM me through the Forum & I'll cancel the listing to give you a deal. I just didn't upload photos here because on my connection it takes forever.
