ICS Language Study Course: Textbooks ? Work Books ?

Post by De Soto Frank »

So, we have the ICS Language Study machines by Edison, and some of the cylinders turn-up from time to time...

Does anyone have / have information about the printed text materials that were supplied as part of the course, circa 1906 ?

I would like to get an idea of what print material I would be searching for...

I believe I have a complete set of Italian language study cylinders on black Gold Molded...

Sorry if this is not posted in the proper department...

Thank you !

Thanks, gentlemen !

Bill, if you have a chance, could you share a picture or two of your books ? (unless they are the same as those posted by Rod Pickett)

The historical society I'm volunteering for is based in Scranton (home of ICS), and at some point, I think they will want to create a display with their ICS Standard machine, so I will on the prowl for whatever printed text media was part of the course outfit.

Up until these photos, I have never seen any of the printed materials. Now I have some idea of what to look /search for.

Rod, if there is anything printed on the spines of the slip-cases, could you post a picture or two of them ?

Many thanks !

Nothing, plain black box. There are 15 booklets which I presume to be a complete, but I do not know for sure.

I have what I believe to be a complete set of an ICS English For Slovaks set, consisting of:
- An outer slip cover (with a label on the spine --- Numbers 5453-6-18-09-500 at base of label)
- An inner slip cover (without a label on the spine)
- Twenty-five booklets (copyright 1904), consecutively numbered in three different ways:
1) Part 1 - Part 25
2) 626A - 626Y
3) 8489 - 8513 (form numbers(?) which are found on the back of each booklet)

I believe only Part 1 (booklet 626A, form no. 8489) contains any illustrations, while the other 24 Parts/booklets/forms contain only text. The first three photos below show the slip covers and set of 25 booklets. The seven scans of pages that follow are the only ones with illustrations (roughly one-half of the first booklet).

Perhaps studying the photos/illustrations/text (unfortunately not English) will help to determine what was supplied to the student with an outfit.

I hope this helps,
Bob Coon

I'll have to check: I have them lying around somewhere.
