Sheet music cabinet or record cabinet?

Post by andyjon100 »

I'm looking for cabinets to hold both my Columbia Favorite and my VV-VI. I thought this would be nice for the Victrola. Is this a record cabinet or a sheet music cabinet? I'm leaning toward record because of the leg style and lock, but then again I'm not too sure, because if the completely flat top.
Thank you in advance!

I would say it is a sheet music cabinet, only because of the horizontal shelves. You could certainly use it for one of your machines though. I personally wouldn't want to store my records laying flat but you could possibly modify the shelves? In any case, its a very nice looking cabinet.

The horizontal shelves say music cabinet to me, too, but then I thought some machines have horizontal shelves for records, as does my Brunswick.....

This is a record cabinet for either a Victrola or another internal horn machine. The contours of the moldings in front of the cabinet, is the sign of a record cabinet. A rule of thumb is if you see a cabinet with shelves that are ¼" thick, that is for records and albums. That would support the records and albums. Sheet music cabinets would have shelves between ⅛" -⅜", and would not be strong enough to support the weight of records and albums.

I think you intended to write 3/16", not ⅜". ⅜" is bigger than ¼"!

Record cabinet. Horizontal shelves holding albums. Victor used horizontal shelves in some of the VV-X uprights.
