Edison brown wax cylinder lid......oddity?

I was fortunate enough today to find a nice brown wax Edison cylinder in it's box with lid. I was kind of captivated by the lid. I've never seen one of these before. Was the record label applied by the dealer after they received it at the store or were they applied at the factory? I can't imagine the general public would be concerned about the Edison dealer's restrictions. I've seen other cylinder lids with a prior label underneath but always wondered what might be printed under the pasted labels.

These lid labels turn up from time to time - - I believe they were originally lids for Edison Blanks.
