Victrola Orthophonic, what model?

Post by larryh »

I have a portable Victor Orthophonic I have had since I was a teenager, that goes back some ways. I always thought it was a Black Padded case. But in looking at "Look for the Dog" I don't see a black listed. Its 17 x 14 x 7" . I can add a photo here. It list a Blue but somehow I don't see the Blue in it?

Looks like a Victrola 2-55. If you take the spindle cap off and remove the turntable the model number should be stamped on the speed control arm, along with the serial.

Definitely a 2-55. Exterior covering is similar to one I had for many years. Many 2-55s have splits at the corners. The interior on mine was crackle brown paint (original).

I never cared much for it, since it was heavy and not as graceful looking as the HMV 101 or 102s. It played OK, however. I finally got rid of it when I moved recently.
Best regards ... AZ*

Thanks for the replies. Its funny I ignored this till our young friend Nick took it to restore the reproducer for me. He said he wasn't exactly happy with it but to me it is better than I had ever heard it. I am putting some things up on my Acousticedison you tube channel for a while featuring it. I have a Telefunken which is basically the 102 or whichever popular European models were. Unfortunately the srping in it has quit playing more than half a record. So far I haven't found someone who says they can fix it right. The point however is that when it played it was very nice, but one day I held the reproducer to the arm of the 2.55 and the sound was way deeper than the small horn in the Telefunken. Ever since that test I wanted to get the Victor running with decent sound. Yes it way too heavy but I like the fact it will play a 12" record normally without running down. And the crank at an upward angle makes for winding to be so much easier on a flat surface.
