Wish I Had The Money For This!

I would really like to have this clock! I haven't seen one like this before.

This was before the Victrola right? Does anyone one have one like this?

Problem is, how can you tell if it's real or one of the Crapo-Clocks described here:

http://www.oldcrank.com/articles/crapop ... e%204.html

I googled Godard's Music Vanderbilt Square and could find no references--either on the main site, or in Google books or in the newspaper archive. If a person could confirm that the shop actually existed, that would be a good starting place for further research, I guess.

If real, I noticed "Pianos & Victrolas" on the glass plate, so this probably dates from the teens or beyond. Again, it makes me wonder, since the clock looks a great deal older than that.

Wow...I wasn't aware of fakes with concern to clocks. Thanks for the heads up Ortho_Fan.

Unfortunately, they're all over the place. It's not enough we have to watch out for Crap-O-Phones and Franken-Phones! Clocks and even pocket watches and table clocks --

-- are not immune!

I think, with the above clock, the best bet would be to, first, confirm the existence of Godards Music, and that it was, indeed, an authorized Victrola dealer. The clock should then be inspected, prior to purchase, by a knowledgeable someone who can date the clock as well as confirm that the clock-face and stenciled glass-work are authentic.

I made some very nice Edison Gold Molded clock faces like the ones in the link a few years ago and used them in repro clocks. They didn't sell for $3500 though. I got the idea after seeing several of them sell on Ebay at outragiuosly high prices.

These clocks keep popping up, and as usual, this one is phony. Don't waste your money. Genuine advertising clocks with phonograph-related graphics are extremely rare, and fortunately there are tip-offs to the fakes. Lets not let the fakers know what they are! ;)

Go to http://www.telechron.net/main.htm and click on "Fakes" (left-hand column near top) and you'll get an eyeful---and that's only a a small selection from just one brand (Telechron) of clock. "Cave canem"....

I've been involved with old clocks for years and I agree that it's likely a fake. Certain things just don't look "right" about it. With clocks you have the same problems as with phonographs: poor restorations, marriages, mismatched parts, too many repro parts, reproductions and outright fakes (fantasy pieces) - things that never existed.

George P: I agree, we don't need to let them know what we're looking at.
