I went to an auction on New Year's day and came home with a pretty dilapidated Victor VV 4-3, hoping that the reproducer was in good condition. I wasn't able to test it beforehand because the turntable wouldn't spin. Turns out the reproducer is toast, but the springs are good so I was able to get the motor running. Someone had decided to reassemble the motor creatively. The spring barrel shaft was sticking out about 2", some of the parts were installed incorrectly, and a large brass washer was used to try to compensate for the incorrect reassembly. Not surprising that it wouldn't spin.
The redeeming part is the ID plates indicate this was sold in Peru. That's cool. The patents label is dated March 10, 1927.
I am not going to restore the phono, the cabinet needs a total refinish and much repair plus the tonearm bracket is broken, as usual. The horn is in good shape, motor works great, other hardware is reusable, so I got a good parts machine with an interesting history for $30.
Anybody need a dilapidated cabinet?

Could be Peru, but Iquique and Antofagasta are in Chile. (And yes, I had to look that up...)

Good info! Thanks for looking it up. I was too lazy to do that...52089 wrote:Could be Peru, but Iquique and Antofagasta are in Chile. (And yes, I had to look that up...)

That's a cool find. I'd have a hard time not restoring it...my next floor model is going to be a Victrola 4-3 Consolette if I can make it happen, either that or a little Brunswick Panatrope.
What did the rest of it look like? Did it have any different features than a standard Victrola?

I'm having a very hard time not saying, "A 4-3 from Lima? Cool beans!"

Yeah, I know, just having a bit of silliness that works on paper--screen--whatever but wouldn't in speech. Sorry if I caused anybody any confusion. Now, back to the subject at hand.Mormon S wrote:My dad grew up and spent most of his life in Lima. He said his grandmother used to have a Victrola and a bunch if records. Makes me wonder

My grandparents gave away, or more like just tossed, not one but two Victrolas and not one but two collections of records when I was too young to be aware of them, much less interested. Sigh.....
