VE8 35X

Post by Golfer62 »

I have a VE8 35X and would like an estimate of value. It appears to be walnut veneer. Would require some refinishing to restore to glory but overall in good shape. Good motor. Original screen. Any input welcome.

Can't estimate value just by knowing the make and model number. Have to see some pics.

Like marcapra said, we really do need to see pictures to provide any reasonable guidance on value. Condition is extremely important, and the fact that you state that it needs some refinishing will detract from its value. There are enough VE8 35X machines in very good to excellent condition, so many collectors will pass on a refinished machine or one that needs refinishing unless it is a bargain. What is the condition of the soundbox AKA reproducer (the "sound head" where the needle is) and the back bracket on the tonearm? These are made of pot metal, and are often found in cracked condition or worse. Also keep in mind that prices for fairly common machines have softened in the past 10 or 15 years, and some machines often sell for about half of what they did in earlier years.

Quality pictures would help. Use the "Upload Attachment" feature located below the "Post a reply" box to add photos.
Best regards ... AZ*

The value of an VE8-35 or VV8-35 depends a lot too on whether it comes with its original albums in good presentable condition.
Without these albums the value drops considerably.
That said, my VE8-35 is my daily Orthophonic player.

Some photos . . .don't know if it's a restoration or parts machine.

Not that it matters in terms of sound reproduction, but I believe this came with the bronze-wash tonearm/reproducer assembly. The tone arm on this machine appears to have been replaced with a gold one or was painted gold. The reproducer appears to perhaps have had gold Rub 'N Buff applied to it, but cannot definitively tell from the photos. Also, was not the original turntable covered with the later Rexine-looking green stuff/fabric/whatever it was called, rather than felt? All cosmetic, to be sure, but it does look like there's been some parts-switching/replacement here.

As mentioned above, there are a few things that may need attention, but overall, this is a very nice example. Definitely not a parts machine! Guessing maybe it would fall into the $350 range?
