Sonora

Post by Dan »

 I have a Sonora upright cabinet phonograph that doesn't have a model or serial number tag anywhere. How do I go about finding out more information about this?

Hi Dan,

Your Sonora appears to be a Baby Grand. You can hopefully confirm this by opening the record storage doors, removing the drawer, and checking the bottom of the drawer for a marking.

By the way, I give your Sonora an award for one of the most attractive dealer decals ever!

There is quite a bit of information about the Sonora Phonograph company.

Beautiful Baby Grand (no corner carving). Looks to be in very nice condition. Congrats!

Update...took the turntable off, found a name tag, no model number, date...just a serial number. Was about to donate it yesterday, now I think I'll keep for a while.

Welcome to the forum Dan, It's a nice Baby Grand from from the late teens to early 20s.

Sonora started as company making bells and chimes for clocks, before getting into the phonograph market. There's a great book available for members of the Antique phonograph society on Sonora.

I hope you can get it cleaned up and serviced, I'm glad you didn't donate it too!

I do hope you keep and enjoy the Sonora. Any Sonora with swelled sides is a gorgeous machine. Also, I've always thought the quality of construction was very good teamed with a good mechanism. I hope you enjoy it for many years.
