Yet another Edison Home question

I bought this beautiful casting from “fellowcollector” last week. When I put the motor on it and turn it on the governor weights hit the side of the box. Did I put it back together wrong? Why would the weights be hitting the box?

(yes the case has been stripped of its finish, I am going to be refinishing it this summer)

Plot twist: I’m dumb and had a ziploc bag inside the cabinet with parts. It was hitting the bag

It is an understandable situation. I too have had similar moments. At least you know what was causing the noise.

Well now I actually do have a question. After getting the parts off the old casting I don’t know how to get this piece back on.

Any suggestions? I must’ve screwed up the left end of the piece because it only goes through one way. But I need that gear to sit all the way the piece. I know I broke it.... haha but I’m Hoping that the mandrel will still turn correctly if I can get the gear on all the way

The feedscrew doesn’t seem to be lining up

The D series of machines, the Standard, Home, and Triumph, suffered from a pot metal mandrel bushing. On an assembled machine the bushing swells and the additional friction slows and eventually freezes the mandrel. Is the pot metal bushing still in place? That could cause the mandrel to not slide into position properly. Some people re-face the old pot metal bushing but I'd recommend replacing it with a new brass bushing. A new one is cheap and it's a permanent repair.

No this is a new casting. The bearing is fine. I just need to move that little gear all the way onto the piece (there should be no gap) . But it’s such a tight fit I’m scared of breaking the casting. I have to do it with the piece on the casting



Or I could file/sand the left edge of the rod down until it’ll fit in the casting. Then make the gear sit down all the way and put the piece back on. I must’ve screwed the end up with a hammer. I definitely learned a lot doing this project

No this is a new casting

My concern was not the replacement cast iron deck but the pot metal mandrel bushing that the mandrel shaft passes through. Jerry

The new casting I got has a new mandrel bushing.

Is it possible that the new bearing is in backwards and is not allowing the mandrel and feed screw to slide all the way along as it should?
I've never worked on a D before so I'm not even sure if it's possible to insert the bearing back to front or not.
I think someone mentioned in a previous thread, that the small gear mounted in the bedplate casting, should have a pin petruding from the centre of the gear as part of the feedscrew bearing.
Has that been rectified?
