Help with my dad's old Talking Machine...Victor 5 ???????

Post by George »

Sirs and Mams
My dad has/had a old Victor Talking Machine that he used to go around and do talking picture shows....It is not in good condition but it is and will be part of my family hopefully forever....Is there any place on the web where I can get a picture of different old players so I can identify it....I did see a Victor 5 picture and it was similar....It has an extra large hole beside crank which I think may be a hole for a brake arm...It is missing..I also need a nut that fits a stud on the bolt that holds the arm on..all the plating on tone arm is beyond shine..It has a black horn that has small stripes on every other indention.I would love to kinda restore it because it will never be sold. I hope!!!!! any ideas????? Thanks...could I send a pic?

Go here: http://www.victor-victrola.com/product% ... mation.htm

Scroll down the model list in the window (left side of page) until you find yours; there should be a builder's plate on your machine that has the model number and the serial number.

To post a photo, save it to your desktop as a jpeg file, then go to the "Upload attachment" window under the "Post a reply" window, click on Choose File, select your jpeg file, add a file comment (optional), then click "Add the file." (Others who've done this more recently than I have should correct me!)

The final step is to click on the "place inline" button. (The image's new URL will appear in the brackets -- ) When you click on the "Preview" or "Submit" button, the image should appear in your post.

It appears to be what we call an "offbrander". It was not made by Victor but
resembles one. That extra hole in the side was likely where the original crank
handle went for the original motor. It very likely somebody put a non-original
motor in it at some point and had to drill a new hole for the crank since the
alignment is different. If there is any way you can get a picture of the motor
inside it would be helpful in determining what exactly happened.

This is, indeed, an off-brand talking machine--produced by the Columbia Phonograph Company -- http://www.intertique.com/TheColumbiaGr ... onola.html -- and originally designed to play records with a non-standard size spindle hole. Here's a photo of an all original model with the large spindle.

I also spotted an ad from 1913 --

---------------------------------------------------------

Apparently, somewhere along the line, the original motor was replaced--possibly, so standard type 78s could be played on this machine. I'm not sure if the other components are original. The horn was used on some Columbia models such as the 25H (from 1915), while the sound box (a Concert Grand reproducer?) looks like the type originally supplied with the "Improved Champion" and other Columbia models--circa 1908/1909.

I believe the "Royal" wasn't part of the large spindle group and was just a cheap Columbia machine made to play regular records, like their "Harvard" machines for Sears. The horn is the most striking thing about it, probably wouldn't be hard to find the motor and turntable from a more common converted Standard to fix this up- aside from the holes in the side condition appears good.
