Harold Lloyd and the Edison Gem 1919

Post by Governor Flyball »

In this 1919 film, less than a minute in, you will see Harold Lloyd ordering Snub Pollard to change cylinders on an Edison Gem.

I'm very fond of looking for gramophones of phonographs in films...
Ha, ha.. at minute 1 the gem is there, and when he takes the boat up on his head, the phonograph has disappeared forever! It would be the only thing I'd not forget to care for! :P

Thanks for sharing this! I LOVE silent comedy films. And having one with Harold Lloyd AND a phonograph in it is a bonus! I've seen quite a few Harold Lloyd films but not this one.

I've always been amazed that Harold Lloyd was able to overcome and continue his well known movie stunts after losing a portion of his right palm and the thumb and index finger of his right hand in an accident that happened in this very same year (1919). He was even temporarily blinded from the exploding prop accident. When you see filmed interviews with Harold Lloyd in later years he always keeps that right hand mostly hidden. Kind of sad. I'm sure he was a great guy.

Great film. Seeing a gem in a canoe was so funny. Harold Lloyd was a comedy genus. Thanks for posting.

Snub Pollard's droopy 'stache might have been gone by the 1940s but he got basically 50 years of movie business. I think he was a pretty good actor considering the time period--a lot better than the guys at Keystone. He definitely had a knack for these kinds of films!

Strange that you posted this... before I signed onto the Forum tonight, I was watching Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton movies on YouTube... It must be ESP or something... :?

I too am a fan of silent film comedys and particularly Harold Lloyd. Just watched "Girl Shy" a few weeks ago and about to re-watch "Safety Last". Never seen this movie - and it was very entertaining. There was a nice article in this month's The Antique Phonograph about Harold Lloyd as well by Brantley Kuglar - well worth a read.

Thanks for sharing this video!
