this isn't my machine and I can't afford to get it  . But that record cabinet sure is nice. Maybe one of the forum members that live down south can go get it. The seller seems to be lowering the price every day as well :?

Out of curiosity is that cabinet uncommon?

That's a handsome set-up in that nicely figured oak. The phonograph and stand complement each other well with their spare lines and gently curved accents. The combination has the odd quirk of needing to place the front of the machine at right angles with the cabinet front. My experience is that the sound of the small Victrolas is, even moreso than larger models, really enhanced by placement in a corner. That would make access to records in storage on the side a little difficult.

But it's easy to see why it had to be this way -- VV-IX was often used as a tabletop model, and even if it could be designed that way a tabletop that was wider than deep would be pretty odd. As to the cabinet, obviously more records could be stored if it opened on the long side, so that's a given.

The doors look a little darker on the inside, almost like fumed oak, which would lead me to wonder if the set had been refinished -- except that a couple of (poorly) refinished fumed oak Victrolas I've seen retained the fumed-oak darkness in the wide grain areas, leading to a real tiger-stripe effect -- actually kind of nice, but nothing like original -- that you don't see on this set. Probably just a trick of time, or light.

It's interesting that the seller provides other information, but posts "unknown" as the model number when the plate is right there on the machine, though it looks dark.

I don't know how unusual the cabinet is, or who made it, but it's one that works very well with the machine. I think there was a similar set on craigslist near me in mahogany a few months ago, but I wasn't as interested in it as I would have been in this oak set.

The seller of this one notes that the motor needs repair and the wood obviously could use some TLC, but in my opinion it's a desirable set. It's been listed for nearly a month, so I'd imagine (hope!) the seller might be ready to entertain offers. I think the price is high, based on what I'd think it's worth in southern New England, and we all know prices vary regionally, especially on craigslist. To me, a fair price would be about $300, but preferably less.

It's a fairly early one, because feet were put on the IX in 1915. So production would have been between 1911 and then.
