Tinfoil Exhibition Poster

Post by phonogfp »

Hello, everyone -

I just received Andersun's reproduction of the Edison Tinfoil Phonograph exhibition poster from the Smithsonian's collection, and I felt obligated to share this with the rest of the board. This poster is just beautifully done. Steve took the copy available from the Smithsonian and digitally cleaned it up (there was unwanted artifact on the rather mediocre Smithsonian copy), then printed it (on paper or canvas - - your choice of medium and size) with a high-resolution copier. The one you see here on my dining room table is 24" x 12" and printed on canvas. The attached photos should illustrate the quality.

If an original copy of this poster surfaced, I can assure you that it would command thousands and thousands of dollars; perhaps even 5 figures - who knows? But if you have a yen for owning an excellent copy of this impossible-to-find poster, I'd encourage you to contact Andersun and ask him to build you one. Believe me, the time to buy a quality product from a dedicated and talented collector is while they're still available. Opportunities like this tend to disappear all to soon.

This is an unsolicited testimonial from a very satisfied consumer.

Best to all - - and thanks again, Steve!

George P.

That is really spectacular. Steve does great work. I'm working with him now on a custom graphic based on the excellent Amberola 1 he posted.

This one is fantastic too. Do you know what was the size of the original and on what medium was it? Canvas? Some of those were pretty big.

What a great poster! I'd love something like that for my bedroom to go with the HMV posters I have. How much does he charge?

I'm not sure of the exact size of the original. I asked Steve to get as close to the original size as possible. As for the original medium, I don't know that either, but the canvas appealed to me. From a few feet away, you can't really tell.

As for prices, that depends on size and the medium you choose. Send Andersun a PM and I'm sure he will be happy to help you. Again - I'm not an agent (or a "paid spokesperson!" ), just a satisfied collector who wanted to pass along a tip...

The original is HUGE: 82-⅜" x 41-7/16". Almost 7 feet tall, which makes Edison pretty much life-size. Obviously this was a billboard poster of its time, meant to be pasted on a large wall. It would be hard to miss.

Beautiful reproduction!

I figured that the original might be a very large one on canvas. Although I'm usually a stickler on originality, I think I'll opt for a slightly reduced size.

Great work by Andersun.

To all here,

Thank you all for the kind words! E-mail me at [email protected] for pricing. I will be in Washington D.C. from Aug 24 to the 29th. I am going to go see the original tinfoil banner to see what material it was on and also to see if the Smithsonian's reproduction (which I had to make numerous fixes) has the same color tones as the original. I could actually do the tinfoil to the original size. My capabilities are 44" wide max. The canvas comes in 42" wide rolls. According to the Smithsonian, the original is 80 9/16" X 39 5/16".

Just a quick bump for this one. I got in touch with the guy who did me another poster - I am more than happy with the results! It's an excellent quality reproduction. I've attached a photo of it, it's taken pride of place above my desk with my other items!

I have to jump on the "Praise Steve" bandwagon....he's done several prints for me. All beautifully done. Here is one of my favorites:
