New to forum - Need help with Blue Ambersol Values

Post by Rich 5 »

Hi folks,
I have enjoyed reading many posts on this site over the years, I'm completely new to this board so I hope I'm following the proper protocol. I've owned and enjoyed a Amberola 30 for 20 years but we are getting ready to sell the player and 96 cylinders. I realize that most of the cylinder are only worth $2-$5 but I believe I have a few that may have additional value. Flat tops with non plaster cores, 20 cylinder with 5000+ numbers and original lids and 1 British cylinder. Anyhow, I've created a complete list but would absolutely value someone looking through it and providing some guidance on the cylinders that may have value. I have attached the excel file. I'm not sure if all the sleeves are proper to the cylinders. Also, the previous owner put masking tape on many sleeves and wrote name of the song. That is why there is an MT under the sleeve column. However, there are quite a few that I have sleeve and lid to with no marking. Thanks again in advance. I will also try to paste the list in this post. One other item, there seems to be a few racial inappropriate/sensitive songs/titles. I do not hold any racist views and have no desire to offend anyone. I am only listing these songs as historical items. Here is my attempt tp paste the list but also an excel file is attached. Thanks so much in advance.

Is this real? How can you possibly have 96 BAs without "The Old Oaken Bucket," "Silver Threads among the Gold" or "Trail of the Lonesome Pine"?

OK, all foolishness aside, those are some great cylinders. If you would like to get rid of some, let me know as I see a bunch of titles I'd like. (I also have an Amberola 30...best small phonograph in its class.)

Generally the 5000 and up series are going to be worth more. Uncle Josh Buys an Automobile is also going to get some interest. (I have it on Victor; though Uncle Josh humor is very dependent on who's listening, he scored well with that one. Your Model T Ford people will buy it.)

I may not be able to appraise them but if you're selling I may be buying; PM me if you'd like to sell a couple.

Note: those with the cardboard core and metal ring are U.S. Indestructibles, not Blue Amberols.

The majority are not all that interesting, but you do have several that are worth more than $5...

If you decide to sell any of them, list them with asking prices, don't ask for "offers"... this is not eBay.

American Civil War, First World War and anything by Vernon Dalhart are the ones listed which are of most interest to me. Most comedy of that era has not aged well and is best forgotten.

The Edison cylinder from 1909 is a longer version with more laughs than the more concise 1914 Victor version. I like both versions but what I prefer in the Victor version is the extended line "... and it ran cross James Fisher's pasture, killed four sheep and a calf and then ran onto a haystack and blowed up!..."

The Edison leaves out the blowed up line.

I saw "Preacher and the Bear" in there. That is one of the few Blue Amberols to have an announcement. (My version is the 2-m black wax of 1905.)

Thanks for sharing this list with us. Nice to see some neat old records still out there.
