Victrola VV4-7

Post by Scott B »

I bought a Victrola VV4-7 for my wife for her birthday. It came with two albums full of records and a lot of needles. When I turn the crank, it will turn about 10 times before what feels and sounds like a gear slipping. The turn table will turn, very slowly, and stops if the needle is put down. I want to see if this can be fixed, or if it is way beyond my scope of knowledge, sell it. Any advice on fixing this? Thank you in advance.

From your description, it sounds like the spring has broken or become detached at the outer end where it attaches to the spring barrel. This is a common problem, and can be fixed. Many here on the forum do their own repairs, and the 2 spring motor in the 4-7 is pretty easy to repair if you are mechanically inclined and take safety precautions. If you don't want to do it yourself, there are a number of folks who repair these. You can send the motor or the spring barrel to them for repair. One that is often suggested is Ron Sitko. His contact info appears in the Links section of the forum.
