Edison Home B -- does this crane look too short to you?

Post by eighteenbelow »

This was another of those "found it all together years ago in he attic of the original owner" deals, but on every other Home I've ever owned, the horns hung off the cranes at something much closer to a 45 degree angle. Is this the wrong crane for this machine, or did buyers back then have a choice of how they wanted their morning glory horn to sit, and hence which crane to pair with their phonograph?

If you're wanting the horn to sit at a greater angle, just shorten the hang chain. Otherwise everything looks just fine, except for the missing crane support that clips to the top edge of the cabinet. The crane is not meant to be totally supported by the lower foot.

Thanks, Jerry. I had actually taken the crane support out while I was tinkering with the motor and had forgotten to put it back. That alone lifts the horn a smidge, but unfortunately wrapping the chain around the crane even once (see picture) puts too much tug on the carriage, and it won't play right. Is this a standard crane, or did they make taller ones? Is there anything else I can do?

As Jerry said you just need to shorten the chain not wrap it around the crane. The chain should hang straight down from its connection on the crane to the horn. It needs to be able to move a little. If you have to adjust the length of the upper crane to straighten it out. There are also 45 degree attachments that can be added to the reproducer that attaches to the rubber connector that will straighten out the connector. Tom
