16" Victor Silent Movie Records

Post by toysbyroy »

I found these four 16" 78rpm discs that appear to be Pathé Exchange soundtracks from silent movies from 1929 - 1930. I don't have a machine capable of playing them. 2 appear to be lateral Victor Talking Machine recordings and 2 appear to be vertical recordings. Anyone familiar with these type of recordings and their potential worth? Thanks, Roy

Can't answer your questions, but I would point out that if these records contain sound tracks tor movies, then the movies are not "silent pictures."

One looks like a soundtrack for a newsreel.

Outfits like the "Vitaphone Project" are interested in lost sound portions of sound on disc movies. Unless you have something rare / lost and being sought by interested parties, I wouldn't think these have any special monetary value.

You have this information on the records, but I have collected it here for your post...

Victor matrix MVE-DR-220. Pathé audio review. Vol. 1, no. 20 / Pathé Pictures
Description: Motion picture soundtrack : Film to wax transfer
Victor ledgers: "Inaudible—Photophone." The soundtrack for the reel includes dialogue and/or closely synchronized sound.

The above DR-220 contradicts itself by saying "Inaudible" and "includes dialogue". Only playing will settle that.
Also all of them say "Film to wax transfer". I assume that means they dubbed from sound film for use in theaters that did not have sound projectors yet. :coffee:

James: thank you for the good info. Tomorrow I will be listening to them with a friend who has modern equipment to play them. I'll post the results. Roy

I've been getting the message about expired security certificate on the DAHR site. I think it's alright.

Love's Memory - I wonder if that's a "soundie."

All films from this point on are all-talking sound pictures, although the Pathé News and Pathé Review are still being offered in silent as well as sound versions.
