How is it known that this is / was actually used for storing gramophone records and not,say, for keeping large envelopes, or a plate rack etc ?

Actually, on second look, it appears to be a fancy desk with various slots for whatever correspondence, etc. The lower shelf pulls out and there is knee room at the bottom to pull up a chair. However, you could store records in it or use it as a bar...
