I just picked up this nice 1928 Columbia Viva Tonal model 160 portable phonograph. I'm having trouble pulling off the record platter. I've been tugging at it but it won't come off and don't want to tug too hard and possibly break something. Does anyone know how to pull off the platter...is there a trick or something else holding it in place?
Thanks,
AR

Re: Help pulling off record platter from portable phonograph
This job needs three hands and therefore two people. Most Columbia turntables are an interference fit and can stick on with age.
Get an assistant to grip both sides of the turntable and pull on it, while you give the spindle a gentle tap with a wooden mallet or rubber hammer. I have never known this to fail.
