EDISON JAR. what is it

Found this today. Glass jar, maybe ½ gallon. Has very heavy clay top covered in white enamel. Hole in top. What was it used for

It's an Edison battery jar.

It looks like a later Edison 2V cell (battery is a collection of cells). Most likely used on the railroads.
