What is this cylinder machine?

Post by MikeB »

I got this cylinder machine with some project machines. There is no lid, and no markings that I can find other than a serial number 6799. There is a label inside that looks like a Columbia label, but I haven't been able to identify this machine. Anyone?

Thanks - Mike

I believe it a unmarked Columbia BV sold as a client machine.

It's a Columbia BV. These were produced in 1908, one of the last cylinder Graphophones, sold inexpensively at $12. Relatively few were sold directly by Columbia, with the typical Graphophone banner. They sold most of the production through mass-marketers such as Sears(under the brand name 'Oxford').

Is this the correct horn for this machine? If so, then I am only missing the back bracket.

Thanks.

The back bracket and horn are for the BVT, but you're machine is just a BV, which would use a 14 inch horn or larger horn with a floor crane.

It was sold as a BV with a small horn that rode on the reproducer as well as a BVT. The BVT would have a back bracket and tone arm and the horn and elbow shown in your photo. Also, I think the BVT came in two versions. Does yours appear to have ever had the back bracket? I'm guessing the tone arm is difficult to locate.

I think that yours is a standard front mount BV, not a back mount BVT, since there doesn't appear to be mounting holes for the back bracket. Even if it was a BVT, the chances of finding the correct back bracket and connecting tubing would be more than a needle in a haystack search...

The horn looks like it could be from a BVT, but there would be no way to use it without the proper connections and back bracket. Here is an original BVT that Grant has for sale on his website, which shows all of the necessary hardware:

Here is the lid for your BV. It's missing the handle, but they show up on eBay as well.

Actually, this machine DOES have holes on the back of the cabinet for some type of bracket.

That's a BVT, then. Hope you find the bracket and tone arm! :clover:
