I think for a homemade item it is pretty cool :) If this was close to me I would consider cleaning it up as a night stand - of course the tonearm placement would have to be checked first 8-)

There is no grill in sight, maybe the internal horn points to the bottom. There is a commercial Capitain Barnett British machine that was made that way, like a table: It is shown here (beware! rogue ghost demonstrator video, open at your risk!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHnaraeKl4Q

The horn mouth emerges to the right of the record compartment.
