What to make of this?

Post by Dischoard »

Do you think this was to keep the barrels and all from rusting? Do you think they took "re-greasing" to mean the outside of the spring drums?
I've just never seen so much grease covering one of these motors before. At first I thought something blew up.

I’m thinking someone over greased it and the grease has leaked all over.

Yes, this is actually pretty common, though perhaps not quite to that extent.

It looks more like someone just went at the exterior with a ton of grease as it's on EVERYTHING. This seems to go beyond your normal expulsion of excess grease in the spring drums. And i'm sure this is why the speed just wasn't right, it's caked pretty thick on the governor weights which makes them uneven and inaccurate. This will be fun tear down for sure.

The grease oozed out. It happens. No big deal. Just wipe it off.

Maybe he was from the "If a little is good, a lot is better" school of thought.

*mainspring barrels (not “drums”).

Ha! If you noticed in the first two sentences I sort of use them interchangeably. When I make the videos of the rebuild I refer to them as barrels but in my head I'm thinking drum (as a musician and someone who just swapped out the shoes in the rear drum brakes of my truck). Thanks!
