Lost Eddie South record now on Ebay

Post by grampaphone »

Hi folks.

I just posted on EBAY a fascinating record some members here might be interested in - item 164922625105 - https://www.ebay.com/itm/164922625105

Eddie South was a virtuoso violin player who performed with famed jazz violinists Stefane Grappelli, Stuff Smith, and Joe Venuti - some very fine hot jazz credentials. During 1933, Eddie performed for six months during a radio broadcast from Los Angeles sponsored by the Cheloni Skin Care products. Sixteen broadcast performances were captured on Columbia pressing. However it is believed ten more were created but never found. I have found B-625 and it is possibly/probably the only surviving copy. Eddie South and his International Orchestra playing two songs on a 'souvenir' record for a local horse riding club. It is MC'd by Owen Dupree, professionally recorded by Recording Inc and pressed by Columbia as a transcription disk. On the record, South plays Duke Ellington's Diga Diga Doo; I cannot find any other recording of him playing this iconic jazz piece. There is a small snippet of the performance in the EBAY listing.

Anyway, it is a special record and may be of interest to some of the TMF members.

Regards, JT
