Schoolhouse Victor Open Air Calisthenics

Post by novkev24 »

Below are some pictures from the 1919 Catalogue of Victor Records showing school children performing open air calisthenics. In each of these photos you can see a Schoolhouse Victor Phonograph.

In the first photo they must be dancing. At that age it's the only reason a guy would touch a yucky girl.

I'm surprised to see the Schoolhouse Phono has what looks like a speartip horn.

I'm fairly new to external horn Vic's. Was a speartip horn uncommon for this model?

According to Robert Baumbach's book Look For The Dog "the earliest instruments came with the standard Victor No. 31 [speartip] horn, but later machines featured a smooth-sided horn designed especially for the Victor XXV."
I'm not sure when the changeover came...perhaps with the larger tonearm? Anyone know?

According to Bob's VDB, the changeover came in October 1918.

The last picture with all those cute little kids looks like it could be the first recorded instance of karaoke.
