From the biggest Amberola to the smallest
I think my copy of this is the loudest cylinder in my collection.

Mmm, two different renditions of the same tune. I'd be interested to know the history of each recording, as to date and location. Thanks for posting these!

I hear no difference in these two. Recorded in New York on August 7, 1909 - along with 15 other titles on the same day! One wonders how many multiple 'takes' could have been made, with that many separate tunes to crank out.Henry wrote:Mmm, two different renditions of the same tune. Take number should be indicated by the dots after "PATD" on the rim.

Mine is take 1, Mould 2.
I cant imagine Sousa's band made too many mistakes, so if any re-recordings were done, I'd say it would have more to do with the recording engineers than Sousa's band.

Definitely a loud one. That's for sure. Thanks for posting your recording. I think the 30 holds up pretty well against it's big brother!gramophoneshane wrote:From the biggest Amberola to the smallest

I also don't hear any difference between the two. I think it's hard to tell with youTube recordings. Also differences in recording devices, proximity to the horn, size of room all could be factors. I have this machine in a pretty small room and it's hard to get the recorder far enough away from the machine that the sound does not distort too much.Edisone wrote:I hear no difference in these two. Edisone, from what reference did you get the exact date of recording? The 2005 version of Sutton's discography says the recording date was July 08 1909. In the 2009 version he's removed the recording dates saying they were inacurate.
Mine says exactly the following: "PATD.1" Does that mean it's take 1, mold 1?gramophoneshane wrote:Mine is take 1, Mould 2.

Yup, you have a copy made from the 1st mold that was made from the first take. Pretty cool!

Yes, it certainly does.
Number of dots = take number, and the number after the dot/s = mould number.
I'd love to find a 4min wax copy of this from mould 1. With the clarity & volume of the BA's, I think it would be one sweet sounding Amberol to have.
