Re: HMV 102 question
Sounds like the leather that controls the governor is dry.
There is a slight delay until the noise starts, that's normal until the brass wheel on the governor comes in contact with the leather foot.
I use Tri-Flow to oil it, I'm sure others use something different.
Also check that the "brake" leather is not rubbing up against the turntable.

Re: HMV 102 question
I'm also inclined to the governor leather or felt pad is old, too dry or too hard. Wetting it in oil is the easiest way to proceed. Oil it and scratch the rubbing face of the leather with sandpaper or a knife, to open the grain, remove old dried grease, and when you see fresh leather, wet it in oil until it is embedded and well oiled. Then the rubbing against the brass disc will be silent.
I remember having replaced one of these by a small piece of thick felt, well oiled, and it worked fine! But for that you have to open the metal ring that holds the leather piece... A bit risky! Try better to refresh and oil without removing the leather from the support bar.

Re: HMV 102 question
NOOO ...! don't put oil in the auto brake or it will not work! It works by friction! Any oil, no oil say all there!
We were talking about the friction pad in the governor!

Re: HMV 102 question
I did oil the the friction pad I kinda thought that the auto brake was controlling that . But all working well now l even fixed the manual brake by putting a small piece of leather on it… all’s well that ends well . Thanks again Inigo.

Ha, ha...
Senior, or the automatic cell phone keyboards...?
I in the forum I use my cell phone mostly, because I use to read the posts on the balcony, or in a bench in the street, while I'm smoking. Then, 99% of my posts, I write with this horrible Googleboard, which suggests the words automatically, or writes what He wants, of you go fast. So many of my posts, I must re-edit after sending, and send them again, when I read actually what He wrote!
