Hard-to-Find Berliner 0228, Stars and Stripes Forever

Post by AllenKoe »

Greetings,

In connection with a forthcoming article on Berliner (again), I find myself in need of an image (scan) of a rarely found record:
(I have also posted a query on the ARSC List).

This particular disc is often found (illustrated anyway, and listed) in various early catalogs, such as the last June 1900 Berliner record catalog, and several early Johnson/Consolidated catalogs (40 pp each) and even in early VTMCo catalogs as well. Naturally, the wording on the label area (of the disc) is altered over time, to reflect the changing name of the several successor companies. But it sure was popular (the picture if not the record)! It was probably intended as a replacement for the earlier Berliner Disc #61.

By the time of its "Victor" incarnation (Oct 1901), it has become A-306, but still entitled "Stars and Stripes Forever (Pryor)." The letter "A" that appears under the 0228 (orig #) is not Johnson's later use of this 'A,' but a coded reference to "A" as a Berliner category for BAND selections (in the 6 o'clock position).

Although we have several pictured variants, from the actual original catalogs, we do NOT have the record itself!

That would make an interesting comparison.

Paul Charosh's book (US Berliner Discography, 1892-1900) gives the recording date of 0228 as "April 11, 1900."

Has anyone seen one of these ivory-billed woodpeckers?

Thanks!

Allen
