HMV Portable - CL - Abbotsford, BC

Post by Lah Ca »

A very battered, but apparently working, HMV portable - $200 CDN - about $160 US.

Abbotsford is a fair distance out the Fraser Valley from Vancouver, B.C.

The portable is quite remarkable in that it is from the 1890s. ;) Or not.

And it appears to be capable of playing red vinyl LPs. Or not.

Looks like an interesting machine but it desperately needs some love and attention.

The HMV102 is commonly found in the UK, and a rough example such as this would probably sell cheaply as a donor machine.
In Canada it would be worth the effort of restoration, provided that the loose case covering is complete.

Don't tell me, that red LP is not included in the sale! I'd insist on it being included. I mean, can you imagine how great it must sound after a steel needle in a heavyweight pickup as been forcibly dragged backwards through the microgrooves?

Let's hope it's not a valuable record. The gramophone certainly isn't and is likely incapable of successful restoration without recovering. Even in Canada I'm not sure its worth all the effort.
