How to rebuild a orthophonic reproducer any help? :)

Post by Victrolaman »

Hi,

just picked up a nice 8-12 yesterday but want to rebuild the reproducer, it is a pot metal one but no cracks, how do I remove that ring in the back, do I need a special tool for that? Or make something, ? Anyone have any pics or a diagram on how to do this and what do I need to change? I bought 2 new rubber gaskets for it but that's all I bought
inside where the ball bearings are they look ok, there is a little rubber cap or
o-ring in there that seems ok. But they may be dry,
also I want to put a new brake pad on and a new pad on the speed control, any help or ideas I'd apreciate it
this is a good site I'm sure some knows, thanks for your help

I think most people cut a new piece of leather for a brake & governor arm from a treadle sewing machine belt.

There have been a few other post on here about rebuilding a #5 soundbox. Unless you've done a rebuild on one of these before, I would not recommend attempting it. For $30 - $40 you can have it professionally done, and will be much happier with the results. Congrads on the 8-12 score...nice machine!

A very risky task.

A very risky task. If you are prepared to loose it then you can try. I would recomend buying the Reiss book as it will discuss this with photo's along with other valuable tips on other repair/rebuilt jobs. Steve Medved is the guy you should contact. He can do it and is very fair on price.

I think I can do it, I know about the little spider fingers that are shelaced to the diafram
I already bought 2 new gaskets and ball bearings for it
how do I remove that ring in the back, I know it unscrews but how?
What can I use to take that off,
also the needle bar seems to move a little bit with the diafram is that normal?
I have done many many number 2's and exhibitions but not one of these
what tool or what can I use to get that ring out

Steve Medved. If you need his contact info, pm me. I would also like to recommend Walt Sommers for Ortho reproducer rebuilding.
