For Sale: Very nice / loud Columbia Q- NEW PRICE

This is a very nice Columbia Q Phonograph, Second style. It was first marketed in July 1904. It has no case or lid and never had one. The mechanism is mounted on a black painted base with decals and piping. The base is in very good condition, and I see no damage. The decal on the front of the base is there but hard to read. The flower decal on the black base is in very good condition. It has a 10” nickel plated reproduction horn that is also in perfect condition. The phonograph plays 2 minute cylinders and has a large #7 aluminum reproducer with a good stylus. Since the phonograph plays nice and loud, the reproducer has not been rebuilt. It plays very loud. It is the loudest Q that I have ever heard. The phonograph comes with 6 cylinders.

The phonograph has been restored, as appropriate. It has been taken apart, cleaned, polished, and sparingly lubricated. The mechanism has been adjusted and plays perfectly.

It appears that the description and the photos were sufficient and accurate enough to allow you to form an opinion of the machine. I suspect that others will find it equally easy to form their own opinions... without your further help.

Duped? You mean that in this case the buyer is getting a machine that has not been stripped of all its originality and repainted (something that actual serious collectors avoid)? That sounds like a good thing to me.

Also what you apparently do not know is that the seller is one of the best phonograph service and repair guys in the country. A buyer can confidently buy this machine and get one that has not been damaged by an unskilled or unknowledgeable “restorer”. You are, by your own ignorance, out of line here my friend.

I don't usually enter the 'fray' on these discussions. but can't hold my tongue on this one.

The criticism thrown at a long-time restorer and collector is unwarranted and immature. I've known the seller of this "Q" for over 40 years. He was one of the first collectors I met in the hobby. He lives within an hour of me and I've been to his home many times. As cmshapiro said, he is one of the better restorers in the hobby. He has done outstanding work on three different coin-op cylinder machines for me, as well as a Class M and a Wizard. I have personally seen the Hexaphones, Multiphone, Eclipse and other high-end machines that he has restored for some of the most well-known collectors in the country. There are a handful of very skilled restorers in our hobby and Ken is one of them.

In this hobby "fully restored" means different things to different people, but to most collectors, preserving the originality of the machine, if at all possible, is preferred over re-painting, re-striping , etc. Ken preserved the Q and "restored" it to as near its original state as possible.

I just "fully restored" an early Victor M that has been in the same family since new in 1903. I delivered it the family this morning. I cleaned and preserved the original finish, disassembled the motor--cleaned the springs and all gears and lubed up everything-- All metal parts were cleaned and polished and the reproducer re-built. Next week, the horn will be sent to John Duffy. I've been in the hobby for 46 years and have a pretty good sense of what collectors mean when they say "fully restored"-- Throwing shade on others in the hobby because you disagree with the definition of a subjective term, is just poor judgement.
