Hello!
I’ve gathered some Christmas recordings from acoustic, electric and Edison Diamond Disks and Blue Amberol cylinders and arranged them in a sort of program in one folder on box.net. You can click on the following link and play them all in sequence if you wish (click on the first tune, and then check the “Auto-play next file” to the right of the “play” button) or play or download them separately. I hope you enjoy them.
Please have a safe and happy holiday season!
Bob

These are unusually good. Are these from your own collection? What equipment did you use?
Enough questions. Thank you !

Re: Christmas Song Collection 2010
I'm glad you like them! Yes, these are transfers from my own collection, most of them done in the past couple days.
For the discs I use a modern Stanton turntable with variable speed control, annd Stanton 500 cartridge with various 78 styli. I get the most use out of the 2.7 mil elliptical truncated stylus. Another good choice is a 3 mil conical, and sometimes a 4 mil truncated stylus. KAB Electro Acoustics is a good site for more information:
http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/index.htm
For the cylinders I've acquired an older electric pickup, handmade in the 1980's by John Petty.
Here's a link to more information about that. Mine is the one pictured with the blue background.

I use a well-tuned Amberola 50 for running the cylinders.
Many people use "Click-Repair" for transfers, but I've used the Diamond Cut Productions restoration software for years. The latest version is the DC8:

The developers did many transfers for the Edison National Historic Site
many years ago, and several commercially-released CDs are still available.
Enjoy the tunes!

Rats. You didn't include O Come All Ye Faithful - Trinity Choir (Victor 16996) in that bunch.
Thank besides. Happy holidays anyway.

No help needed.
There's some nicely chosen records you uploaded there. Good stuff, thanks.

Re: Christmas Song Collection 2010
I've put all the above on my mp3 player, to entertain myself at work. Have a little cheapo ($6.32 including postage) folding amplified speaker, to which I attach the player with a couple of rubber bands. Instant micro boombox! The sound is not bad, considering how small and inexpensive it is. Now I have the Magical Musical Christmas Coat, mystifying all who hear ancient tunes following me around. hehe
What are the chances : I was at a historical society event, which included a few old songs performed by local folk-tune guys. One selection was "Low Bridge! Everybody Down!" but I noticed the words didn't seem right. It just so happened that my gizmo was with me, AND it had Ed Meeker singing that song in 1913 ! I played it for the singers, between shows. Never mentioned that the words were changed, I just let them hear it. Their minds were thoroughly boggled @ the pure coincidence, and they did notice the correct words.
I wasn't there for the second performance, to see if they changed the words. ( It's not "15 miles on the Erie Canal", it is "15 YEARS.." - that's how long the character has worked on the canal with his mule, Sal. Ed Meeker used a 'Negro dialect', which also surprised them. No un-PC words, thankfully. Everybody enjoyed the hee-hawing of Sal, near the end of the record.

Re: Christmas Song Collection 2010
I've put the above to my pc. I have an internet radio/mp3 player attached to my main sound system in the livingroom. We'll be listening to these, along with the one Swingband78 posted in another thread, over the next days.
Btw, great story about "Low Bridge". I learned that song as a kid in grade school. We also sang, "15 mile" not years,. I've not heard the Meeker version. Maybe you can post it.
I've got an Edison recording of "Silent Night". The verse is also different there in 1910 than what we now think of as the standard.
