Edison musical box

Post by gramophoneshane »

I came across this ad (on the net) from the Edison Phonographic News of 1894, but unfortunately the text isn't very clear. It appears to be a Class M phonograph.
Does anyone have a clearer copy they could scan & post?

I can just make out the text:
"The above represents a perfected Edison phonograph adapted for home use in reproducing musical selections containing in one handsomely carved oak case everything necessary for its perfect operation. Twenty selected records by noted musicians and musical organisations are given with each cabinet placed in the drawers at the sides of the case shown in the cut. These are reproduced through a horn, throwing the loud band music into the room so that it can be heard by a large number of persons or hearing tubes can be used and six or more persons can listen at one time.

We have also sold these cabinets with 20 tube attachments to be used by exhibitors in travelling placed in the back of their buggy or carriage, covered with rubber cloth to protect it from dust and rain. They say the novelty of the cabinet brings them patronage.

We have used this cabinet in giving exhibitions in churches, halls and assemblies with the most satisfactory results by attaching a 26 inch horn held in position by a hoop and stand. In this way audiences of several hundred people are entertained and their numerous encoures show how well pleased they are."

From Allen Koenigsberg's article about the Edison Phonographic News, published in The Sound Box in March, 2010:
Perhaps most curious (on page 15 of the first issue), was an engraving of "The Edison Musical Box"which contained a battery-powered Class M electric phonograph. It is tempting to think that this was never actually produced, although it was claimed they were sold to some traveling Exhibitors (see the side handles). But another photo, of the relocated shop at 183 Vine Street in Cincinnati, shows the very same model in the entrance. None have yet surfaced.
