Mute ball on Edison B19 Chalet?

Post by MikeB »

I have an early Edison B19 Chalet, serial number 6582, that has no mute ball/volume control mechanism. I just read briefly that this feature was lacking on the early ones, but added later on. Is this true? There is also a small bracket on mine mounted on the lower inside in front of the horn, and I do not know the purpose of it. My first thought was that it was for a missing mute mechanism.

I personally don't recall ever seeing a mute ball on a B19, but I've only seen a handful of them in person.

I think the little bracket is a stop that limits the movement of the horn.

I think originally that little bracket may have had a rubber bumper on it .
I've always added one anyway to prevent the horn striking it metal to metal.

No mute ball on mine, and mine was probably made in 1922-1923. The 100 series horn had a tone just right for a small dwelling it didn’t need one.
