Re: You ok Shane??
I'm doin' fine & dandy thanks
Luckily my suburb wasn't effected really, apart from a lot of rain & a bit of wind. We're pretty high here, and it's fairly hilly too, so there's not much chance of flooding thank goodness. The worst I got was a 25' palm tree at the side of the house fell over, so I'll be busy with the chainsaw in the near future, but I'm extremely grateful I got off so lightly.
A fair few people I know were evacuated from their homes & have suffered damage to their properties, and last night my maternal mother lost everything she owns. Another friend lives in Toowoomba where the inland tsunami happened, and I've been unable to contact him which is a bit of a worry, but with things the way they are at the moment I'm not surprised.
There's 115,000 homes without power, 36,000 properties effected in 32 suburbs around Brisbane, 7,500 homes lost in the greater city area alone, 90,000kms of roads damaged throughout the state, & 75% of the state has been declared a disaster zone.
So far there's 14 confirmed dead & we're down to 62 missing now, but I think the death toll is about to rise significantly. I just heard a couple hours ago that they've pulled 25 cars from under a bridge near where my maternal mum lives (lived), and they've closed the area to everyone but police & the army, so there's probably quite a few poor souls still in those cars. It's truly a shocking situation.
We had a similar flood here back in 74 (which I've always blamed for the lack of phono related stuff around here) but it was more localised to Brisbane/SE corner of the state. This time it's much more wide spread, plus the general population is 5 times what it was 35 yrs ago, so there's many times more people effected.
After the 74 flood, they "fixed" a lot of problem areas, but the brilliant minds of our government built an inland dam in the Lockyer Valley a few hours west of Brisbane. They then got more rain in one week than the city of Melbourne gets in a year (and Melbournes famous for being our wettest city), which filled the dam to 190% capacity, so everything from there to here got 90% of a huge dam poured down on them on top of the rain. A lot of what they fixed did work, but I guess they never took into consideration what "could" happen further inland & how it would effect the major river systems & low laying areas from the LV to the east coast.
The rains held off for the last couple days thank goodness, but they're predicting another severe cyclone for next week, so it could happen all over again yet.
Lets hope not!

Glad you are ok! Did you hear from your Mom yet? We had some earthquakes
