The New Bond Street address and the ghastly later lid transfer suggest a date no earlier than 1928.
The offset location of the turntable greatly detracts from the machine's appearance, but I assume that it is dictated by the dimensions of the horn. Included in the sale are an HMV Fibre Needle Cutter and a large supply of steel needles.
The auction is in Glasgow, which may limit interest from potential bidders and keep the sale price low.

Interesting to see, thanks Roger! Those soundboxes with their adjustable lifebelt system command a premium (some EMG owners favour them) and this one looks to be in good condition although the photo is a bit distant.epigramophone wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 4:21 am https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auct ... 17e8ffbfdc

Re: Orchorsol cabinet model for auction.
Another ludicrous and near worthless set of photos, typical of auctioneers. They're selling a GRAMOPHONE, presumably the likes of which they've never seen before and yet we get one photo showing it open and that's it. Meanwhile they waste two photos on a bag of tins (which we can't see clearly) and a needle cutter! This is a piece of furniture apart from being a gramophone. Do they not consider the prospective buyers might actually want to know what it looks like when closed (which it would be more often than not)?
Where do they recruit auctioneer staff from? There must be a "special" school or something. Certainly all forms of common sense must be left at the door, it would appear.

And, even when exterior photos are shown, the surface of the lid is almost always omitted.Steve wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 4:14 am Another ludicrous and near worthless set of photos, typical of auctioneers. To me the soundbox send to be broken somehow... between the cover and the back there seems to be a black material in a mess... Could be the lighting, though...

I noticed that as well, but the photography was too poor to be certain.Inigo wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 2:45 pm To me the soundbox send to be broken somehow... between the cover and the back there seems to be a black material in a mess... Could be the lighting, though...
The main body of this soundbox is cast aluminium, but the rear flange which attaches the lifebelt is pot metal.
Other collectors have reported that this flange can disintegrate when removed, which is why I have resisted the temptation to replace the rock hard lifebelt on mine.

Alex Kirtley has made brass replacements for the pot metal ring in the past.epigramophone wrote: Tue Feb 14, 2023 4:17 amI noticed that as well, but the photography was too poor to be certain.Inigo wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 2:45 pm To me the soundbox send to be broken somehow... between the cover and the back there seems to be a black material in a mess...
