You don't see these every day: the very short-lived antique brown version of the classic HMV 101 which succeeded the crocodile cloth version just prior to being discontinued in favour of the solid brown "chocolate" version, itself hardly commonplace. The seller appears to be oblivious to its rarity.
Shame about the seller again using that brick garden wall typically to perch machines for their photo opportunities.

Well, I'm lost for words. True, the listing did not adequately sell the gramophone and included some very poor photos but this time he was prepared to ship it and there were 23 watchers. Or was that 22 sleepers?
But £120?! Come on. "bjosephineb" gets more than that for average condition black 101s!

I do agree but I wonder why you didn't bid more to get it ? (Unless you did get it of course). Maybe you already have one ?Steve wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 2:32 am Well, I'm lost for words. I already have (a much better) one! Mind you, it cost me triple the cost of the one in question. That's why I said 22 sleepers out of 23 watchers if you get my drift. I could just as easily have been referring to the sole bidder as the one who wasn't asleep but, I'm not sure about you, when I bid generally I don't also "watch" the item as there is little point, so I discounted him/her/they.poodling around wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 4:35 amI do agree but I wonder why you didn't bid more to get it ? Interesting points and 23 Watchers does seem a bit odd.Steve wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 5:12 amI already have (a much better) one! Mind you, it cost me triple the cost of the one in question. Maybe the number of people who collect gramophones has dwindled and of the remaining one's there is little room left for additional items as they already have so many ?
I need to 'clear out most of my HMV 101's as I collected them for being slightly different 'designs' - but these difference interest me far less these days.
There will always be other types of gramophones collected for investment reasons of course.

I have listed gramophones which attracted many watchers but sold for the maiden bid. I am convinced that many people watch items which they already own, out of curiosity to see what they fetch.
If a rare item sells exceptionally well on eBay, other examples soon appear. They usually sell for less, when the bidders discover that they are not as rare as was thought when the first one sold.

Re: Very rare "Antique Brown" 101 on Ebay
In your case, this is probably more to do with the fact that you already have a good handle on the value of the item you're selling and therefore your start bid already reflects the minimum price you'll accept within that range. In the instance of this 101, it was probably undersold by a seller who doesn't seem to have quite as tight a grip on the subject whilst the market is also a bit unpredictable (read: expensive for common items and very cheap for some rare items). And his listing was very poor.epigramophone wrote: Thu Jul 06, 2023 8:57 am I have listed gramophones which attracted many watchers but sold for the maiden bid.
